Shiba Inus - Exercise Requirements
Shiba Inus are active dogs. They can get sufficient amount of exercise without many acres to run on. Take your dog for a walk and run. Take your Shiba to obedience classes in order to prevent aggression toward other dogs. Harsh training methods are not suitable for Shiba Inus. This breed needs a firm, fair and understanding owner.
Shiba Inus - Health Issues
Shiba Inus are sturdy, healthy little dogs. They are easy keepers and require no special diet other than quality dog food. Shibas do have some hereditary defects. For instance, patellar luxation is common in toy breeds and sometimes appears in Shibas. An experienced veterinarian can detect this condition by palpation. Another disease worth mentioning is hip dysplasia. It occurs in Shiba Inus but it is not as serious as in some other dog breeds that are larger than Shibas. Responsible breeders will not breed any dog whose hips have not received a rating of "fair" from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Shiba Inus are not totally free of hereditary eye defects. Dogs with serious eye defects should not be bred.
[Socialization]
With such dogs as Shiba Inus, early socialization is a must. Some Shiba puppies may be shy of strangers while others are dog aggressive. Early socialization helps obtain the best possible temperament from a puppy. Well-socialized Shiba Inus make wonderful pets.
