Shiba Inus - Breed History

Shiba Inus were bred to flush birds and small game. The early Shiba Inus were known in three varieties. Each variety was named after the region of the dog's origin. There are a number of related breeds that were developed from the original Japanese native dogs. They are the Akita, Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kai, and the Shiba. The word Shiba could mean "brushwood", and the dogs were named for the brushwood bushes where they hunted. There is another theory as to the origin of this name. The fiery red color of the Shiba is a reminder of the autumn color of the brushwood leaves. The breed could have been named Shiba because of its small size. These explanations combined, the Shiba is sometimes called the "little brushwood dog."

Shiba Inus - with Children

When planning on buying a Shiba Inu puppy, consider the age of your children, and the level of their maturity. Shibas dislike being continually restrained and manhandled. Teasing and rough playing can make a puppy shy or irritated. It is necessary that a child learn to respect a puppy. It is difficult to train a child who is used to running in and out of the house at will to be attentive and make sure the Shiba doesn't get out. Training the puppy and child when they are little can make the child aware of the necessity to use a double door system. If you teach a little child to be careful with a dog, Shiba Inus can be children's best friends.
